This April, three Upstate manufacturing companies will be amongst five companies from South Carolina honored at the 2015 South Carolina Manufacturing Conference and Expo. 

BorgWarner of Seneca, S.C., a global product leader in powertrain solutions and Mack Molding Co. of Inman, S.C., a full-service contract manufacturer, are both winners of the Silver Crescent Award, given to companies that surpass a specified score in seven distinct categories. Toray Industries, the world's largest producer of carbon fiber, is the winner of the Smart Choice SC Award for its $1 billion investment in building an advanced materials manufacturing plant in Moore, S.C. 

 

SOUTH CAROLINA (March 13, 2015) -- An ATV maker, a manufacturer of treated wood products and a carbon fiber producer are among five companies to be honored at the Salute to Manufacturing Awards Luncheon in connection with the South Carolina Manufacturing Conference and Expo.

Gov. Nikki Haley will be the keynote speaker at the luncheon.

“We are pleased to have this chance to recognize the critical importance of manufacturing to South Carolina,” said Grady Johnson, group publisher of SC Biz News, which is presenting the conference with Dixon Hughes Goodman.

These are the companies that are winners of the Silver Crescent Award for Manufacturing Excellence Awards for 2015:

  • BorgWarner, Seneca, S.C., part of the TorqTransfer Systems business unit. Its primary product is transfer cases for 4WD and AWD pickup trucks, SUVs and passenger cars.
  • Cox Industries, Orangeburg, S.C., a family-owned and operated manufacturer and distributor of treated outdoor wood products for the residential, commercial, industrial and utility markets.
  • Honda of South Carolina Manufacturing Inc., Timmonsville, S.C., which has ATV and side-by-side manufacturing facilities. It is one of Honda’s 14 major factories in North America.
  • Mack Molding Co., Southern Division, Inman, S.C., supplying leading plastic injection molding and contract manufacturing services to a variety of industries.

The Silver Crescent Award is presented to companies that earn or surpass a specified score on seven criteria. Winners of this award, to be announced at the luncheon, demonstrate superior performance in seven categories: citizenship, employee engagement, customer satisfaction, environmental stewardship, innovation, financial performance and longevity plan.

In addition, the inaugural Smart Choice SC Award will be given to Toray Industries, a Tokyo-based company that will invest $1 billion in building an advanced materials manufacturing plant in Moore, S.C. Toray is the world’s largest producer of carbon fiber.  Making one of the largest initial investments in state history, Toray plans to create 500 jobs.  This award honors a company that has made a significant economic development announcement for South Carolina in the previous year.

Construction and transportation machinery manufacturer investing $41 million to create an expected 131 new jobs
  
Kobelco Construction Machinery Co., Ltd., a company that specializes in the manufacture, sale and service of construction and transport machinery, is establishing operations in Spartanburg County. The $41 million investment is expected to generate 131 new jobs in Moore, S.C.
 
Founded in 1999 and headquartered in Japan, Kobelco Construction Machinery is one of nine business domains of the Kobe Steel Group. Globally, the group, which was first established in 1905, employs close to 40,000 workers worldwide. Included among the main products and services provided by the Kobelco Construction Machinery are hydraulic excavators, mini excavators, wheel loaders and road construction equipment. 
 
Kobelco's Spartanburg County operations will specialize in the manufacturing of hydraulic excavators. Located off of the Moore-Duncan Highway in Moore, S.C, the approximately 156,000-square-foot production facility and stand-alone office building will be positioned in close proximity to both I-26 and I-85. The facility will allow Kobelco to reduce the production lead time of machineries for its North American customers and improve capability for meeting market needs. The new factory will be incorporated into the company's North American subsidiary, Kobelco Construction Machinery U.S.A. Inc., which is headquartered in Katy, Texas.
 
Kobelco Construction Machinery reentered the U.S. market in 2013. Since that time, the firm has concluded dealer agreements with 62 companies, 52 of which are based in North America. Until now, the entire sales volume has been shipped from the company's Hiroshima Itsukaichi factory in Japan. The establishment of this Spartanburg County facility will reduce operational burden on Hiroshima plant while also allowing for the creation of an optimal group-wide production system.
 
Construction of the facility is expected to be completed in December 2015. Hiring for most of the new positions is anticipated to take place in July 2015. $2 million investment by automotive supplier to bring new jobs

PecTec Corporation, a supplier of top-quality semi-finished and finished metal products for the automotive industry, is establishing its first U.S. manufacturing facility in Spartanburg County. The $2 million investment is expected to create 15 new jobs in Spartanburg, S.C.
 
Founded in the summer of 2014 in Spartanburg, S.C., PecTec Corporation operates under the Braun GmbH umbrella. Braun, a German-based firm, was founded in 1992 to provide customers with a wide range of non-ferrous metals. PecTec is Braun's first international production operation. 
 
Located at 130 Corporate Drive in Spartanburg, PecTec will provide customers with a line-up of non-ferrous metals finished in a variety of different types and designs. Included in the company's offerings are foils, strips and sheets of aluminum, aluminum alloy, copper, copper alloy and stainless steel. Once it's fully operational, the 11,600-square-foot Spartanburg facility is expected to produce more than six million linear meters of product annually.

Chemical manufacturing operation will bring $13 million of new investment

PIDC (Pacific Industrial Development Corporation), a specialty chemicals manufacturer, intends to open a manufacturing facility in Spartanburg County. The development is projected to bring at least $13 million of capital investment and create 53 new jobs over the next five years.
 
With operations in five countries, PIDC is a chemical company focused on innovative research and development of advanced materials, including specialty alumina materials, rare earth powders, aqueous solutions and a variety of proprietary, formulated powders.
 
Located at 5396 N. Blackstock Road in Spartanburg, S.C., the company will be moving into two buildings totaling approximately 110,000 square feet. $75 million investment expected to create 250 new jobs in the Upstate

Manufacturing and distribution center to bring $45 million investment and create 450 new jobs

PL Developments, a manufacturer, packager and distributor of pharmaceutical and consumer healthcare products, is launching new Greenville County operations to expand its presence in South Carolina. The new development is projected to bring $45 million in new capital investment and lead to the creation of 450 jobs.
 
Founded in 1988 and headquartered in Westbury, N.Y., PL Developments primarily serves U.S. retailers with an assortment of more than 450 unique products across several healthcare applications, the company's nationwide facility footprint exceeds one million square feet.
